Driving with the Brakes On

I've loved this song for ages, and believed it would make an excellent vid. I was first introduced to it when I was frantically devoted to Mulder and Scully, and thought it might work well for them. But I wasn't vidding then. When Trip, and by extension T'Pol, had caught my fannish attention, I remembered the tune and decided to use it. Listening to the song's lyrics, I've speculated what the song might be about. "Now the kid has gone" and "trying to steer the conversation from the thing we've done" have made me wonder if the singer might not be driving back with his girlfriend after she has had an abortion. But I don't know for sure. What I really like about the piece is how, while the singer acknowledges that all is not right with the world between him and the woman he may love, he also vows he'll never leave her. It's just swooningly romantic. (At least I think so!) See if you agree. |

Driving with the Brakes On
Driving through the long night.
Trying to figure who's right and who's wrong.
Now the kid has gone.
I sit belted up tight.
She sucks on a match light, glowing bronze, steering on.
And I might be more of a man if I stopped this in its tracks
and said, come on, let's go home.
But she's got the wheel,
and I've got nothing except what I have on.
When you're driving with the brakes on,
when you're swimming with your boots on,
it's hard to say you love someone.
And it's hard to say you don't
Trying to keep the mood right, trying to steer the conversation from
the thing we've done.
She shuts up the ashtray, and I say it's a long way back now, hon.
She just yawns.
And we might get lost someplace so desolate that no one where we're from would ever come.
But she's got the wheel and I've got to deal from now on.
But unless the moon falls tonight, unless continents collide, nothing's gonna make me break from her side.
'Cause when you're driving with the brakes on, when you're swimming with your boots on, it's hard to say you love someone.
And it's hard to say you don't
It's hard to say you love someone.
And it's hard to say you don't. |
