I'm crazy for this song and have been ever since I heard it for the first time more than a year ago. I love the back and forth between the male and female singers, and the way Doe and Edwards' voices blend. Because I've been focusing on slash relationships, a vid pairing based on this song didn't immediately come to mind. Then, one day I was coming home from work, my i-Pod plugged into my ear, and I thought, 'Dysfunctional relationship...can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em...California--oh my god, that's Veronica and Logan!'
Veronica Mars is a show I sorely miss. Its first season was, for me, one of the finest complete seasons of television ever. I remember how an episode would end, and I would wonder, 'How in the world can I possibly wait until next week to find out what happens?!' It had compelling, complicated characters; intriguing storylines; some of the best comic dialogue ever; fantastic acting; and some wonderful noirish cinematography.
I once described the show to a friend as a "dark and twisted Nancy Drew." Veronica, of course, was that plucky, damaged girl detective. As played by Kristen Bell, she was tough, scarred, sassy as hell, and smarter than anyone in the room. Logan Echolls, played by Jason Dohring, started out as her nemesis. Veronica called him Neptune High's "Obligatory Psychotic Jackass." However, it wasn't long before she and the viewing public came to discover who and what Logan really was. By the show's end, I found him more sympathetic (not to mention self-destructive) than Veronica, who was no slouch herself. My lovely beta PRZed (who came through like a diamond with this project just as with so many others) once called him "that magnificent bastard." I would tend to agree. This is Veronica and Logan's story.
