In Spirit by Libra Three (slash) NC-17 159K I've been recommending this story high and low because it makes me happier than just about anything. It's set post-SR where, despite having worked his way back to health, Starsky is told he will not be allowed to return to the street. Hutch desperately wants to make things right, so after they quit the force and the idea of opening their own detective agency gets kicked around, he decides to make it happen. This wonderful little first time story incorporates curtain fic, a ghost, appearances by two of my favorite canon guest characters, affection so fully realized it's like you can touch it, and just enough angst to keep things interesting. It's terrific.
Pigs in Space by Morgan Logan (slash) NC-17, 96K I've said it once and I'll say it again, unlike Pros, S&H isn't exactly a fandom known for its AUs. KAM bucks that trend, and Dana Austin Marsh's Gentlemen, Start Your Engines is a classic. But I think MoLo's sci-fi romp can also compete at that elevated level. In this story, Starsky & Hutch are still cops, only the beat they patrol is a good deal more…intergalactic. The guys still enjoy same the rock solid friendship they do in canon. However, unbeknownst to Starsky, Hutch is harboring a secret that will change everything between them. This story is laugh out loud funny—if for no other reason than the assumptions Starsky makes about certain cultural practices and terms tied to Earth's past (this story is the only one I know of that comes complete with a glossary!). But it's also got some scorching hot between-the-sheets action. I adore this and urge all readers leery of AUs to give this one a shot. You'll recognize the boys, despite certain…deviances from canon.
The Smell of Sex by Jeylan (slash) NC-17, 130K This is the only story I've been able to find by Jeylan, but I love it. In it, a simple comment made in the police locker room by a homophobic cop gets the guys thinking. They do flirt with each other a hell of a lot, and their hands are on each other all the time. Why is that? What does it mean? From there, each man makes tentative overtures, trying to understand their own hearts and the needs of their partner. Their coming together is gradual and sweet, and slowed by nerves and a friendship they're wary about risking. In the end, it's the friendship that sees them through. The story is very funny, features wonderful dialogue, and the relationship between the boys has a tenderness that never descends into treacle.
