World Outside Vidder Notes

World Outside Vidder Notes

I wish I could be more succinct. In this instance, the skill is beyond me.

Though I've seen the film, I hadn't realized this song had been used for the movie Closer, with Clive Owens and Julia Roberts (Man--great soundtrack! The Blower's Daughter is on it too). I first learned of this song, watching a Supernatural vid, Waiting by NYCalls0909. That vid is superb, and the music really got to me, so I went to iTunes to buy it (the record companies really don't get how vidding can help their bottom line--I don't know how many songs I've purchased after hearing them in vids). iTunes had some other Devlins songs available as well, I listened to the 30 second clip for World Outside and downloaded it too.

I couldn't get it out of my head! I loved the energy of it, the way the piano line and percussion seemed to drive the song forward. It had a moodiness to it and a sensuality that really sparked something in me. I'd wanted to see if I could do a "first time" vid. First time stories are my absolute fav in slash fic. I really like the struggle that comes with feelings changing and the fear that arises when a character realizes, if he acts, his entire world becomes rearranged. A lot of slash vids in S&H are sweet and/or funny. I'd put my Take Me the Way I Am vid in that category. I think that's because, at least in my point of view, the overall feel of the series lends itself to that interpretation. The guys are so damned affectionate. This vid tries to take a slightly darker tack. Hutch is considering his relationship with Starsky in a new light, and hasn't quite decided how he is going to jump.

From a technical perspective, I'd like to point out one thing in particular. First off, this song has a long intro, which is fun because you get to fill it in. I could have used footage, but I'd decided to use graphics and a voice over instead. I'd wanted to find something visual to use that suggested age, something that had worn down over time. These aren't entirely new emotions Hutch is feeling and I wanted that reflected in the look of the thing. I found a photo of a graffti heart on a stock photo website, purchased it, and then recolored it (it was originally a blue heart on a kind of peachy background) so it resembled rusted metal. Unlike Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premiere doesn't have a ready-made filter for scratchy film. I scouted around on various Premiere boards, trying to see if it was possible to combine existing filters into something approximating the look. I wasn't having much luck. Then, I found a posting with someone asking my exact question. One of the people responding offered the use of a series of still shots he had created that could be applied one after another to create the look desired. I downloaded them. And because these filters were intended for use with four color footage (as opposed to the rusty tones I was using with my graffiti heart), I went through and hand-colored all 113 filters used to the proper tones. Each filter used is five frames long (1/6 of a second). Basically, I did cell animation, which I'd never done before. I was pretty pleased with the way it turned out!

I also tried to put more movement in this vid. I'm never going to be a vidder who uses so much motion that the whole thing feels like The Blair Witch Project. I don't enjoy that as a viewer, so I wouldn't go that route. However, I've seen some gorgeous vids that zoom and swoop and really pull the viewer along. Where appropriate, I tried to incorporate more of that feel. I guess we'll see how it worked.
